THE SECRETARY OF STATE
WASHINGTON

August 3, 2004

Dear Mrs. Klebnikov:

It was with great sadness that I learned of the death of your husband, Paul. He was passionate both about his work and about Russia, and his death is a tragic loss for Russians and Americans alike.

Paul was a true asset to both of our nations and will be sorely missed. He never forgot his Russian roots and bravely sought, through the power of the press, to improve the lives of all Russians. Paul's decision to return to Moscow as editor of Forbes Russia reflected his genuine optimism about the future of that country. It is incumbent upon all of us, despite the difficult circumstances and challenges we currently face, to uphold that optimism.

The United States Government is committed to seeing that those responsible for this senseless crime are brought to justice. Our embassy in Moscow has been in close contact with Russian law enforecement authorities. We have offered the aid of our Legal Attaché and have pledged our assistance in any other way possible.

I know there are few words of comfort I can offer at this tragic time. My prayers are with you and all of Paul's friends and loved ones.

Sincerely,

Colin L. Powell
